About the film

After debuting at the Cannes Film Festival 2018 where it received a standing ovation and was awarded the Jury Prize, the film was nominated for both an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes in 2019, becoming the highest-grossing Arabic film of all time since then.

The lead character, Zain, is played by a young Syrian refugee called Zain al-Rafeea who has since been resettled and is flourishing in Norway. With the world facing an ongoing displacement crisis, millions of families have been forced to flee their homes and now require long-term solutions. The tremendous resilience of individuals such as Zain al-Rafeea demonstrates their determination to build better lives and is something that demands our support and advocacy.

CAPERNAUM is an opportunity to reflect on such issues. We hope conversations will evolve around how, in a time of increased polarization and negative rhetoric, we can find new ways to engage communities via a more human and empathetic narrative.

Film Synopsis

In a courtroom, a young boy named Zain (Zain Al Rafeea) stands before a judge. He asks to sue his own parents for giving him life. The circumstances that have brought him to this point take us on a journey through his poverty-stricken upbringing in Beirut where he lives with his family.

Forced to live by his wits in order to survive, Zain’s life reaches a turning point when his parents make an unforgivable deal that will see his younger sister married off. Left distraught by this terrible act, Zain takes to the road. While looking for work at a fairground, he befriends a young woman who is working illegally as a cleaner and helps to look after her adorable one-year-old baby, Jonas. Zain and Jonas form a touching bond but things get much more complicated when circumstances force Zain to make choices that will have huge ramifications.
